A damaged tooth can have a major impact on your smile. Not only will it detract from your smile’s appearance, but it can also impair biting and chewing, making it difficult to eat certain food. At Elevation Dental Studio, we use dental crowns to repair and restore damaged teeth, salvaging their usefulness. Crowns are porcelain caps that fit over cracked or broken teeth to protect their compromised structure. If you live in or near Mt. Vernon, Yonkers or New Rochelle, New York, you can see Dr. MitzAnn Edmond for crown treatment.
Although getting a crown can be a bit time-consuming, it’s not a complex treatment. The more you learn about the porcelain crown procedure, the less intimidating it will be. In this post, we’ve broken down the dental crown process into five simple steps to put you at ease.
Dr. Edmond will schedule a consultation to examine your condition. We’ll take X-rays to assess the damage and determine if a crown is needed. X-rays will also reveal any hidden issues that can interfere with your treatment. At this time, we’ll also explain more about dental crowns, how they work, and what to expect so you can make an informed decision about this treatment.
If you proceed with crown treatment, we’ll create a plan for your procedure. We review the different types of crowns available to you, discuss the pros and cons of each, and help you select the restoration best suited to your needs.
Dental crowns fit over existing teeth compromised by decay or injury. To accommodate your crown, we’ll need to reshape your damaged tooth to ensure a comfortable fit. After prepping your tooth, we’ll take a mold of it and the surrounding teeth to have a crown custom-made for your use. This mold is sent to a lab where crowns are fabricated. In the meantime, you’ll wear a temporary crown to avoid sensitivity.
When your porcelain crown is ready, we’ll call you in for a fitting. Your temporary crown will be removed, and your porcelain crown will be put in its place. We’ll evaluate the quality, design, natural esthetics, and precise fit of your crown before cementing it in place permanently.
Dr. Edmond will schedule follow-up visits every 6 months to monitor the state of your crown and overall oral health. These checkups will be followed by professional dental cleanings to keep your crown and smile in optimal health. Dental cleanings rid your mouth of harmful plaque and tartar buildup that can lead to additional damage to your teeth. Regular dental care will help keep your porcelain crown going strong for years.
